Arlington drops Stanwood

STANWOOD — In a battle of Wesco 3A North’s top two girls soccer teams, Arlington handed Stanwood its first loss of the season, defeating the Spartans 2-0 on Wednesday night.

“Anytime we win a league game it’s a big deal,” Arlington head coach Nathan Davis said. “Stanwood is a bit of rivarly so its a good win for us but there is a long ways to go (in the season).”

Playing in a hostile environment on the road, junior Mckenna Landry gave the Eagles momentum and a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 17th minute. A cross from junior Alison Enell was deflected in the box right to Landry, who finished for the easy goal.

“In any sport when you get a lead it gives you that energy, especially on the road,” Davis said. “It’s difficult to win at Stanwood and getting that lead gives you some energy and confidence.”

The Eagles put the game away in the 72nd minute when senior Bre Morren scored off a quick give-and-go pass from Mckenzie Buell, putting Arlington up 2-0.

“The second goal was huge because we got a little cushion,” Davis said. “… We just tried to be patient tonight. On the road we had to wait for our opportunities.”

Junior goalkeeper Kat Sanchez anchored an Eagle defense that has now earned three shutouts this season. The Eagles improved their record to 3-1-0 in league play, 7-1-0 overall. The Spartans fell to 4-1-0 in league play, 5-1-1 overall after the loss.
