EVERETT — The Boeing Co. picked up 24 airplane orders in the last week of September, but that couldn’t offset 37 cancelled orders. As of the start of October, the airplane maker has logged 1,000 net orders (1,106 orders placed, 106 orders cancelled).
The biggest cancellation came last week from Air Berlin, which cancelled its orders for 15 787 Dreamliners and 18 737s.
Boeing also had orders for two 747-8 freighters cancelled, meaning it has received a net of -1 orders for 747-8 jumbo jets in 2014. (Cargolux ordered a freighter in February.) Several finished 747-8s are currently parked around Paine Field in Everett or stored in Arizona.
The two cancelled freighters appear to have been from GECAS.
Boeing found new customers for Air Berlin’s 15 787 delivery slots. Sales of the Dreamliner have been sluggish this year, in part, because customers will have to wait several years before taking delivery. Boeing has 861 unfilled orders for 787s. It would take seven years to get through that backlog at current production rate. Boeing has said it will increase the build rate from 10 to 12 a month in 2016, and to 14 a month by the end of the decade.
Airbus has not updated its orders through September. It had logged a net total of 722 orders through August.
