There’s no law that pumpkins have to be orange.
“The white pumpkins have become a lot more popular,” said Janet Fairbank of Fairbank Hands-On Pumpkin and Animal Farm in Edmonds.
Red and green pumpkins are also picking up steam.
Of course, orange is the coveted color. It’s that pumpkin shape that counts.
“If it’s a white one or a red one or even if it’s green, it’s still a pumpkin,” Fairbank said.
Her family’s farm with pumpkin patch, maze and hay tunnel has been an October ritual for hordes of kids over three decades. Thousands of pumpkins have found loving homes.
Choosing a pumpkin is serious fun.
“They look, twist and turn it and try to decide. It depends on what they have in mind, what they are going to make out of it,” she said. “Little tiny kids think they are balls and start throwing and rolling them down the hill.”
She tells about a little boy on a field trip who took so long looking for a pumpkin that the teachers got worried.
“They finally found out that his dad had told him, ‘Pick the one with your name on it,’ ” Fairbank said. “One teacher distracted him and the other teacher put his name on it. He grabbed it. He was as happy as he could be.”
Pumpkins are not only funny looking, they are misunderstood.
“A pumpkin is not a vegetable, it’s a fruit,” Fairbank said. “I don’t know why people make it a vegetable. You don’t make an apple into vegetable.”
You know why some pumpkins are green?
“It means it’s still growing,” she said, “Like the leaves on trees,” when fall comes and the tree stops feeding them. With pumpkins, it’s the same way. When it’s grown and gets off the vine, the pumpkin will orange up.”
Or white up.
