Growing memories at Everett school
Discovery Elementary School in Everett participated in the Green Apple Day of Service on Sept. 27, with parents and students joining staff to refresh the school’s Discovery Verde Garden. In all, about 75 volunteers took part in the project.
This past year’s spent vegetation was removed and the ground was prepared for winter and spring crops. Farmer Frog supplies seeds and educated students about gardening. Cedar Grove Compost supplied compost.
“I like working in the garden because it is fun and fun things come from hard work,” said Bethany Nguyen, 9, who volunteered with her father.
“It brought great joy to my heart seeing how much our students loved gardening and sharing it with their families and school community,” said staff member Sedonia Cochran.
“I hope we grow radishes, peppers, and strawberries next year,” said Brandon Zamora, 9.
Snohomish native now in Congo
Dr. John Paul Quattrochi, a graduate of Emerson Elementary and Valley View Middle schools in Snohomish, recently received his doctorate degree in global health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Quattrochi is currently employed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Quattrochi family moved to South Carolina when John started high school; he graduated from Hilton Head High School in 2000. He later graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics, then received an international Fulbright Scholarship to study malaria in Uganda for a year. A Rotary Scholarship helped him extend his studies to the University of Naples in Italy before completing six years at Harvard. His dissertation was on the mortality of children under age 5 in Africa.
Quattrochi, 32, works now in Bukavu in public health with his fiance Megan.
“We give many thanks and credit to his educators in Snohomish, where he had wonderful teachers,” said his mother, Lisa Quattrochi.
