Plain and simple I-594 is complete nonsense not common sense. I-594 targets law -biding citizens period, and absolutely nothing to keep criminals from getting guns. The gun shows have self-monitoring rules, such as only members who must pass a background check can buy, sell or possess firearms at said event.
Do some gun owners sell guns to criminals? Yes, it will happen though not often. I-594 has been created by antigun groups hellbent on banning firearms altogether. These people already know this is not going to happen, the next best thing in their minds is to make nonsense laws that criminalize gun ownership. The terminology in I-594 states transfer of firearms, this includes loaning and borrowing to persons that are not barred from gun ownership, such as taking a friend or relative hunting or target shooting, also included are members of law enforcement concerning their backup weapons, needing to borrow or should they have the precinct gunsmith service their weapon, that is a transfer.
I-594 states all transfers be processed threw an Federal Firearms Licensed dealer.
A easy analogy, let’s say automobiles, fitting considering far more people die from auto accidents, if a friend or relative were to borrow your car (even just to drive you to the hospital) would require you to take the auto to a dealership to process a transfer of ownership and the same to take you car back, failure to do so first offense would be a gross misdemeanor followed by a class B Felony.
I-594 will have more people buying more guns and create more criminals. What about those mentally unfit persons, I-594 doesn’t address this problem, unless involuntarily committed, there isn’t anything preventing them from legally purchasing a gun, even when all the warning signs that they are a danger to themselves and others. We need smart laws not nonsense horse dung schemes like I-594.
