Move over, 88 mm cannon, there is a new big gun in the Flying Heritage Collection.
The M55 carries a massive 8-inch (203.2 mm) howitzer. The projectiles for the gun (designated M47) are so big, the self-propelled gun has room to carry only 10 of them. Each shell could carry 200 pounds of conventional high explosive, or if things got really ugly, the M55 can deploy nuclear projectiles. At a rate of one shell every 2 minutes, the crew of the M55 could lob the heavy projectiles 17,000 meters downrange. (That’s more than 10 miles!)
