SHORELINE — Edmonds-Woodway blocked a first-quarter punt that led to a quick score and the Warriors hit on three touchdowns passes on successive drives en route to a 55-14 victory over Shorewood on Friday night in a game that Edmonds-Woodway had to have to stay in contention for a playoff berth.
Chantz Justice has 105 rushing yards on 20 carries and a touchdown for the Warriors, and his success on the ground opened up the play-action game for quarterback Nick Morales.
“That’s kind of who we are, a running team that takes advantage of the play-action,” Edmonds-Woodway coach John Gradwohl said. “We got into a pretty good groove tonight offensively where we felt like we could do a lot of things.”
Morales found Nick Venema for scoring passes of 47 and 22 yards, and Jalen Nash for a 60-yard strike that turned a 14-7 Warrior lead into a 34-7 advantage by halftime.
Victories by Edmonds-Woodway and Glacier Peak on Friday set up a matchup next week at Edmonds Stadium where the winner will be the No. 3 seed out of the Wesco 3A/2A South.
“We’ve been looking at it like we’ve been in the playoffs since we lost to Terrace,” Gradwohl said. “We lose and we’re out. We’ve had our backs against the wall after three tough losses to start the season.”
Morales finished 6-for-7 for 159 yards and three touchdowns for the Warriors, who held Shorewood to 131 yards of offense.
