Whether it’s “True Detective” or “Gracepoint,” the new fad in television is the season-long mystery, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats one episode at a time.
A new podcast has borrowed that technique.
“Serial,” a new spinoff of “This American Life,” is a new podcast that follows a true crime case for an entire season of episodes. Over the first four episodes, which range from 27 to 54 minutes in length, host Sarah Koenig has been unspooling the evidence and contradictions in the 1999 case of a murdered high school student in Baltimore. A new episode is released each Thursday morning.
The new podcast, or on-demand audio program, is in the same vein as the 2004 documentary “The Staircase,” taking the listener on a journey through twists and turns from new suspects to shaky alibis one episode at a time.
