OLYMPIA — The Washington Transportation Department says vehicles traveled a record of more than 57 billion miles on public roadways in the state last year, an increase of fourth-tenths percent from 2011.
The department’s annual Corridor Capacity Report says congestion — vehicle hours of delay — increased 1.5 percent in the period.
The recession year of 2009 was the least-congested year for Washington drivers. The department says increased congestion is a result of employment levels, among other things.
The report says there were 165 miles of routinely congested highways in 2013 in Washington.
