The Seahawks placed Derrick Coleman on injured reserve Saturday, ending the fullback’s season a week after he broke his foot in pregame warmups in St. Louis. Coleman had surgery following the injury, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said it would likely be a six-week recovery, which based on this move was longer than the Seahawks were willing to hold a roster spot open for Coleman.
Seattle signed receiver Phil Bates off the practice squad to fill the open roster spot.
With Coleman on IR, the Seahawks do no have a fullback on their roster, though running back Robert Turbin will play in that spot for the time being. The Seahawks did experiment with Bates a bit at fullback last season, but his promotion from the practice squad most likely was about his ability to help on special team, because in addition to his role at fullback, Coleman had been a big contributor on teams.
