MONTESANO — The City Council meeting in Montesano was forced to recess minutes after it started Tuesday night when a council member who is deaf said she could not understand the sign language interpreter.
Marisa Salzer said she needed a “certified” interpreter. The worker providing the service is considered only “qualified.”
KXRO reports the city attorney recommended that the meeting be recessed.
City Administrator Kristi Powell told KBKW that the “qualified” interpreter met requirements for a reasonable accommodation of Salzer’s disability.
The city was forced to provide interpreters for Salzer last summer after she complained to the state Human Rights Commission.
