Want an opportunity to be photographed with the Memorial Cup? Well, Saturday is your chance.
The Memorial Cup, the trophy all major-junior hockey teams are striving for, will be at Xfinity Arena on Saturday when the Silvertips host the Edmonton Oil Kings. It’s the first time the Memorial Cup has ever been in Everett.
The Oil Kings are the defending Memorial Cup champions. However, their presence in Everett on Saturday isn’t the primary reason why the Memorial Cup is in town. The Tips decided before the season began they wanted to bring the Memorial Cup in for an appearance so that the fans could get an up-close look at the trophy itself. They timed it to coincide with Edmonton’s visit so they could tip their caps to the Oil Kings for being the first team to bring the Memorial Cup back to the WHL since Spokane won it in 2008.
The Memorial Cup will be on display at guest services throughout Saturday’s game and fans will be allowed to get a good look at the trophy and photograph themselves with it. You, too, can find former Silvertip Michael Wuchterl’s name on the shield that contains the members of Vancouver’s winning team from 2007, or take a closer look at the extra welding required after Spokane captain Chris Bruton’s incident in 2008.
And who knows? Maybe sometime soon the Tips will bring the Memorial Cup back to Everett on their own merit.
