An Everett reader asks: “Is there anything that can be done about absentee landlords that allow grass to grow so far over the sidewalk it is almost hidden? I’m handicapped right now and walk very slowly with crutches so uneven sidewalks are really noticeable to me.”
Property owners are responsible for controlling vegetation along the sidewalk and in the planting strip or roadway shoulder in front of their property.
“This type of issue can be reported to our code enforcement team at 425-257-8565,” said Meghan Pembroke, a city spokesperson. “Our code enforcement officer will visit the location reported by your reader and will issue the property owner a citation if appropriate.”
These rules are not unique to Everett’s municipal code, of course.
Arlington offers pamphlets with more detail on what’s expected, such as trimming vegetation up to 18 inches high so that it’s not hanging over the edge of a sidewalk.
Summer is the typical time for these reminders when plants are growing quickly. In autumn, cities also ask that property owners be careful to keep storm drains and gutters in front of their property free of leaves and other debris.
