When I saw Seattle’s Smokey Brights at the Fisherman’s Village Music Festival in Everett last May, I got the chance to chat briefly with front man Ryan Devlin. It was then that he first told me about their new record and what it was going to be called.
“Taste For Blood” he said as a grin crept across his face.
What a tease! If you are going to tell me your new record is called “Taste For Blood,” you had better have a copy in your pocket ready to hand me because anybody who hears that title is gong to want to listen right away. But no. Instead it was a long, six month wait. A wait that I am happy to say was very well worth it.
This week Smokey Brights released “Taste For Blood” and it instantly made a late jump into my best of 2014 list. The title track, which also opens the album, is as ambitious as the name suggests and while it starts out sounding like the happy Smokey Brights we are used to, it quickly takes a bit of a dark and haunting turn (in a good way). Just wait till you hear “Catacomb” and “Monster House.”
Not only is “Taste For Blood” a record you should pick up today (if you already got it go ahead and get it again) but you should take the chance to hear all these songs live at the Tractor Tavern this Saturday at the release party with Ravenna Woods and Kelli Schaefer.
