LAKE STEVENS — Public toilets can be scary.

Most of us do not like to go No. 2 in public, and some of us will avoid it, sometimes at great cost.

Lake Stevens author Kelly P. Gray understands.

His new book “Log On: The Big Book of Bowel Movements,” released this month by Amazon, addresses all sorts of issues surrounding BMs.

“It might take a special personality to really appreciate the book,” Gray said. “But the subject is something everyone can relate to, whether we talk about it or not. And it’s funny.”

Gray, a happy Baby Boomer, said he’d been thinking about writing the book since his high school days in Southern California, where he and the other guys on his baseball team swapped stories about BM mishaps.

The book is divided in two sections. The first deals with such subjects as foods and what they produce, wiping methods, odor, the closet pooper, constipation and the ultimate bathroom setting. The second half is a collection of funny pooping stories that should keep any toilet reader entertained.

One is about the time Gray swallowed a gold crown and spent the next few days looking for it.

“In one of my college journalism classes, the prof talked about writing column about what you know,” Gray said. “For years, I kept a pad and pen handy in the bathroom.”

Gray is now at work on volume No. 2 of his book.

“I’ve had a good response from people about the book,” he said. “I don’t expect to retire on it, but we have sold dozens of copies and I know a lot of people who are buying them for stocking stuffers.”
