VICTORIA, B.C. — For the first time this season the Everett Silvertips have a losing streak.
Everett lost its second consecutive game as the Tips fell 3-1 to the Victoria Royals in Western Hockey League action Friday night. It’s the first time Everett has lost back-to-back contests in 21 games this season.
Austin Carroll, Jared Dmytriw and Joe Hicketts scored for Victoria (13-11-2-0), which won despite being without key overager Brandon Magee, who was given a five-game suspension by the league for a spearing major penalty in Wednesday’s 5-3 loss to Kelowna.
Jayden Sittler played a solid game in goal for Victoria, making 24 saves to earn the victory.
Brayden Low scored the lone goal for Everett (14-4-2-1). Carter Hart made 26 saves in net for the Tips.
Everett had two good scoring chances right off the bat that didn’t go in, then the Royals found the net at 4 minutes, 17 seconds. Dmytriw made a nice pass into the slot to Carroll, who put a shot into the top corner to stake Victoria to a 1-0 lead.
Victoria doubled its lead at 11:06 of the second period. Dmytriw fired wide with a shot, but he put home the rebound off the back boards to make it 2-0.
The Royals took control of play later in the second period, but Everett got on the board against the run of play at 15:57. Nikita Scherbak’s long pass sprung Low on a breakaway, and Low slipped the puck under Sittler to get the Tips back within one.
Everett created some pressure early in the third period, but Sittler made a big save on Patrick Bajkov’s rebound attempt. Then the Royals put the game away with 6:11 remaining as Hicketts put a slap shot from the circle into the top corner to make it 3-1.
The Silvertips return to action Saturday night with game against Seattle at the ShoWare Center in Kent.
