Silvertips star winger Nikita Scherbak appears to have avoided a major injury, according to information provided by the team Sunday afternoon.
Everett’s leading scorer was injured on a legal hit into the boards during the second period of the Tips’ 3-2 shootout victory at Seattle on Saturday night. Scherbak was put into a neck brace and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. He was taken to Valley Regional Hospital, where the primary area of concern was his lower back. Prior to leaving for the hospital Scherbak passed movement tests in all his extremities.
Initial tests at the hospital cleared Scherbak of any head or neck problems. Further tests determined there was no serious nerve or back damage, and scans for fractures came back negative. Scherbak was discharged without having to stay overnight, though he did leave the hospital on crutches.
Scherbak will be re-evaluated by Silvertips team doctors Monday. However, it would seem Scherbak and the Tips dodged a bullet on this one.
Though Scherbak’s injury doesn’t seem as serious as initially feared, he will no doubt miss some time. We’ll see how Everett’s offense fares minus its most gifted offensive player.
