RENTON — A search for a child reportedly swept away in the Cedar River at Renton had a happy ending Wednesday afternoon when searchers learned there never was a child in the water.
King County sheriff’s Sgt. DB Gates says a woman in the river was rescued. She went into the water for her dog after it jumped or fell in. Witnesses who called 911 thought there was a woman and child.
Emergency responders who were dispatched about 9 a.m. Wednesday to Ron Regis Park pulled the woman out of the water. She was taken to a hospital and wasn’t able to say right away she was alone.
Dozens of deputies and fire department divers continued searching the cold, fast-moving river.
The dog, a black lab, climbed out on its own.
