ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A veteran Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race musher is recovering from a broken back and leg after she was struck by a driver who left the roadway and crashed into her team near Willow.
Karin Hendrickson was running her team along the Parks Highway near Mile 91 when it was struck just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, KTUU-TV reported.
The 44-year-old musher posted on her Facebook page just after midnight that she was at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, waiting to be transported to Anchorage. She said she had a broken back and leg.
Hendrickson was listed in fair condition Wednesday morning at Providence Alaska Medical Center.
The crash scattered Hendrickson’s sled dogs, Matanuska-Susitna Borough spokeswoman Patty Sullivan said. All of the dogs, including one missing overnight, had been found as of 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Willow Dog Musher’s Association’s Facebook page, the television station reported.
Hendrickson is a four-time Iditarod finisher, and she had signed up to participate in the 2015 race in March.
A helicopter was dispatched to the scene of the crash, but it was unable to land because of poor weather, Sullivan said.
Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey told KTUU shortly after the crash that he was climbing into his truck to help round up the dogs.
