DETROIT — Detroit Lions defensive tackle C.J. Mosley and center Dominic Raiola have been fined for their actions in Sunday’s 34-9 loss to the New England Patriots.
Mosley said Wednesday that he was notified by the NFL that he was fined $22,000 for hitting Patriots long snapper Danny Aiken on a fourth-quarter field goal.
Officials on the field ruled that Mosley used his helmet to spear Aiken, but Mosley pointed to film that appeared to contradict that ruling, plus another clip of Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork hitting Lions long snapper Don Muhlbach in similar fashion.
Mosley’s penalty sparked a testy final two minutes that ended with Raiola diving at Patriots defensive tackle Zach Moore’s legs on a cut-block attempt as the Lions took a knee to end the game.
Raiola was not fined for that play but was fined for a club move used at a different point in the game. Raiola was fined $10,000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for a striking an opponent.
The play was on a third-and-9 from the Detroit 35 with 57 seconds remaining. He struck the Patriots’ Zach Moore.
The league cited him for violating a rule that prohibits “striking, swinging at, or clubbing the head, neck, or face of an opponent with the wrist(s), arm(s), elbow(s), or hand(s).”
The 14-year veteran did not get disciplined for a chop the block he made during a kneel-down at the end of Detroit’s 34-9 loss to the Patriots. Raiola said he didn’t intentionally try to hurt anybody or try to do anything out of the ordinary on that play, which the NFL deemed within the rules.
