EDMONDS — An Edmonds woman shot a man who was trying to break into her home while her husband and children were sleeping early Thanksgiving morning, Edmonds Police Sgt. Mark Marsh said.
The man, 22, is being treated for a gunshot wound at Harborview Medical Center.
The woman, 33, awoke at about 3:15 a.m. to a man pounding on her door on the 16400 block of 75th Avenue W in Edmonds. Her husband, their three children — ages 14, 10 and 5 — and a teenage friend were in bed at the time.
The woman got up, armed herself and tried to stop the man from coming into the house. When he forced himself inside, she fired her 9-millimeter pistol, shooting the man in the abdomen.
The confrontation lasted about 30 seconds, Marsh said.
“It probably seems like forever when you’re in that circumstance,” he said. “Her children and one of the kid’s friends were sleeping in the house. Obviously, that was her concern.”
At this time, there is no known relationship between the woman and the intruder. She called 911 before she confronted him.
Edmonds Police officers arrived and provided first aid to the man before he was taken to the hospital. Marsh said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Detectives plan to interview the man before deciding on criminal charges.
The woman, her husband and the four children are doing OK, Marsh said.
