LYNNWOOD — Opponents of the city’s new fireworks ban say they’ve collected enough signatures for a petition to overturn it.
The signatures — 4,740 of them — were presented at City Hall on Monday, said Ted Hikel, a former city councilman who leads Lynnwood Citizens for Fireworks and Freedom.
The city has three days to review the petition before the signatures must be forwarded to the Snohomish County auditor’s office for verification, Hikel said.
If the petition is submitted to the county and is found to meet all the requirements, the city then would have to enact the change or put it to a vote. The issue could be on the ballot in 2015.
An election date is not yet known, Hikel said Monday.
The petition signature campaign began shortly after the City Council voted to begin banning fireworks as of next year. Before the ban, fireworks were allowed in Lynnwood during certain hours on July 4.
