Prince George 3, Everett 1

TALKING POINTS

If I can paraphrase the comedian Chris Rock, “Those Silvertips ain’t go crazy, those Silvertips went Silvertips!” (you’ll have to search for the tiger quote yourself).

Everett fell back into its bad third-period habits again. The Tips led 1-0 going into the third and had a 20-10 edge on the shot clock. It seemed like Everett should have been in control of the game.

But as has become all too frequent for Everett over the past month or so, the Tips surrendered the initiative after taking a lead into the third period. And for the fifth time in the past 14 games Everett gave up a lead after going into the third period ahead. Everett did manage to salvage two of those in shootouts. But the three losses have all been crushing, and they all came on home ice.

Everett was playing without leading scorer Nikita Scherbak and it showed. The Tips’ only goal came on a five-on-three power play, and they didn’t generate a whole lot outside of that. Everett didn’t give much of anything to Prince George over the first two periods, either. But the Tips paid the price for being unable to score more than one goal when doubling the Cougars up in shots over the first two periods.

The Tips also missed the presence of Ben Betker on defense. With Betker and Tristen Pfeifer out of the lineup, Everett’s defense is small and not particularly experienced. The tying and go-ahead goals both goals came when Everett’s third defensive pairing was caught on the ice for long shifts.

TURNING POINT

Once again it was a case of the third period arriving and Everett getting timid playing with the lead.

THREE STARS

First star: Jansen Harkins, Prince George. One goal, got the third-period rally started for the Cougars.

Second star: Dawson Leedahl, Everett. No points, but in his first game back from his knee injury he was a wrecking ball with his physical play.

Third star: Tate Olson, Prince George. One goal, it was the game winner, and he played a very nice overall game from his defensive position.

The Herald’s honorable mention No. 1: Noah Juulsen, Everett. One assist, this was one of the best games I’ve seen him play. He was in complete control of his game, both offensively and defensively.

The Herald’s honorable mention No. 2: Brad Morrison, Prince George. One assist, he’s overshadowed by Harkins when it comes to draft-eligible forwards from PG, but I kind of liked his game better tonight.
