LYNNWOOD — A petition to overturn a fireworks ban in Lynnwood appears to be failing.
The Snohomish County elections office expects to wrap up signature verification on the petition this week, manager Garth Fell said Tuesday.
Of the signatures counted so far, only about 47 percent of the 4,740 submitted signatures have been valid, Fell said. A higher average is needed to meet legal standards requiring the city to act.
If the petition doesn’t have enough valid signatures, the county will notify the city, Fell said. What happens next would be up to Lynnwood officials.
The petition has been organized by Lynnwood Citizens for Fireworks and Freedom, led by former city councilman Ted Hikel.
If the petition is found to meet legal requirements, the city will have to adopt it or put it to a public vote in 2015. The ban was approved in 2014 but goes into effect in 2015.
Fireworks previously were allowed in Lynnwood during certain hours on July 4.
