Pete Carroll wouldn’t rule Russell Okung out for this week during his Monday press conference, and two days later the Seahawks coach is still holding out hope that his left tackle can return from the bruised lung that sent him to the hospital during Sunday’s game.
“He’s still in the mix,” Carroll said. “He’s going to have some stuff done tomorrow that will let us know where he sits and all that. So he’s not out of the plan yet.”
The “stuff done” comment would indicate Okung is perhaps having more tests done Thursday that might clear up his status more. Until then, the Seahawks will likely plan on going with Alvin Bailey at left tackle, then hope for good news late in the week. Carroll reiterated what he said Monday about Bailey—that he struggled some, but should be better with a full week at one spot. Bailey usually practices at tackle and guard throughout the week, so if he knows he’s likely playing left tackles and gets a full workload with the starters at that spot, he should be much better prepared.
Carroll said center Max Unger is having a hard time recovering from the work he did in Friday’s practice, and it sounds like there’s a chance he won’t make it back this week despite Carroll sounding optimistic about that happening on Sunday.
“Max won’t practice today,” Carroll said. “He had a tough recovery from Friday’s practice, so he’s going to be not going today. We’ll see where he is tomorrow. We’re taking it one day at a time now. He’s close enough where we have a chance.”
On TE Tony Moeaki, who hurt his shoulder Sunday, Carroll said, “He was out there today (in the walk-through), but it’s one day at a time. He’s got to show us he can play.
TE Cooper Helfet, who has missed three games with an ankle injury, “Will practice full speed today, which is good so we have some choices there.”
