PARKLAND — Police say a man wanted for murder was shot and killed by Pierce County sheriff’s detectives when he fired at them in the hallway of an apartment building.
At about 2 a.m. Wednesday, a 23-year-old man was shot and killed at the Woodmark apartments, said spokesman Ed Troyer. His name was not released.
About an hour later, detectives responded to a report that a man with a goatee matching the suspect’s description was knocking on doors and trying to enter units at another apartment complex about four blocks away.
The detectives found him in a hallway, but before they said anything, the man pulled out a gun and fired a shot, Troyer said. Both detectives returned fire. The 21-year-old died at the scene. His name was not released.
No one else was injured in the incident.
The initial fatal shooting is believed to have stemmed from a fight over a drug deal, Troyer said.
The man killed by police was a convicted felon and known to detectives as a burglar in the Gig Harbor area, Troyer said.
