SHORELINE — Drew Magaoay led all scorers with 28 points and helped Shorecrest hold off Shorewood 60-57 in a Wesco 3A South matchup on Thursday night.
The teams exchanged leads throughout the first half, but the Scots took control in the third quarter and held the Thunderbirds at bay in the fourth for the victory.
“The biggest lead that either team had all night was six, so we were really trying to get a two-possession lead any way we could,” Shorecrest coach Brian Fischer said.
Shorecrest (1-0, 3-1) led by five in the waning minutes, but Ian Kirk hit a bucket to make it a one-possession game. Shorewood got a stop and attempted to tie the game at the buzzer, but the 3-point attempt rimmed out and was corralled by Brantle Harris.
Kirk led Shorewood (0-2, 1-7) with 17 points.
Fischer said Magaoay is tough to stop because he can score in a variety of ways.
“He can get to the basket really well, score in the mid-range area and if you leave him open he has a really smooth shot,” Fischer said of Magaoay, who had just one 3-pointer on the night. “He’s grabbing a lot of attention from opposing teams trying to shut him down, but he scores a lot of his points in transition out of our defense, and it’s tough to stop that.”
