Nurse of the Year honor for Safe house founder
Paula Newman-Skomski, a forensic nurse examiner with Providence Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse and the founder and chair of Everett nonprofit Peoria Home, has received several awards this year in recognition of her work. Most recently she was named 2014 Nurse of the Year for Innovative and Non-Traditional Nursing from the March of Dimes.
Newman-Skomski also was named a Community Champion by Molina Healthcare, was a finalist for an Inspirations Award in Women’s Health from the Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, and received the Spirit of Nursing Award from Providence Regional Medical Center.
Peoria Home is a planned two-year residential recovery community for women leaving behind prostitution and drug addiction. The nonprofit currently is raising funds for a home.

Bikers deliver toys, money for food bank
The Monroe Star Chapter 428 Motorcycle Touring Club again held a successful toy drive for Sky Valley Food Bank. The motorcycle group recently presented food bank Director Neil Watkins with a large number of toys and more than $700.
City birthday brings in $300 for scholarships
More than $300 in cash donations were collected for the Michelle Ringler Recreation Scholarship Fund and the Manu Sood Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission Scholarship during the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony and 60th birthday celebration.
The celebration attracted more than 300 people who sang carols and “Happy Birthday” beneath a full moon.
Mukilteo Police Dept. friendly to veterans
The Mukilteo Police Department was again named a Best For Vets: Law Enforcement by Military Times. The recognition focuses on culture and policies that cater to military veterans. Mukilteo was a “top finisher.”
One-third of the Mukilteo police force are veterans, two are spouses of service members, and two are in the reserves. Detective Sgt. Cheol Kang, a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, nominated the Mukilteo Police Department again this year. “The department has always been supportive of my reserve service and has worked to ensure all of our reservists have what they need both professionally and for our families,” Kang said.
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife Police force also was recognized on the 2015 list.
Lake Stevens welcomes newest firefighters
Lake Stevens Fire recently welcomed their newest members following the trio’s Oct. 21 graduation ceremony. Paramedic-firefighter Joe Virnig, firefighter Chris Harrott and firefighter David Pick each received the First Due Engine Company Award after completing training at the North Bend Fire Academy.
