I applaud President Obama’s decision to normalize relations with Cuba. We established relations and trade with China in 1972 and Vietnam in 1995, both communist countries with poor human rights records. We have no excuse to continue our 53-year-old embargo against Cuba today in 2014. It is time to stop allowing the vocal Cuban exile community to determine the U.S.-Cuban relationship and start thinking about the bigger picture of improving the lives of both Cubans and Americans through cultural, economic and diplomatic ties.
