ROSEBURG, Ore. — The bug that causes Legionnaires’ disease has turned up in the water at the Roseburg VA Medical Center.
The hospital tells the Oregonian that nobody has gotten sick. The disease is a severe form of pneumonia.
Center officials said routine sampling showed positive results in three buildings on the main campus for the Legionella bacterium.
Symptoms of the disease include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches and headaches. They usually appear two to 14 days after exposure.
Bottled water is being distributed in the affected buildings, and the hospital is setting up alternative solutions for showers and hand-washing.
The hospital will heat and chlorinate the water and then test again to ensure it is safe.
