NEWPORT, Ore. — The Oregon Coast Aquarium at Newport is caring for an ailing olive ridley sea turtle that washed ashore on the southwest Washington coast.
KPTV reported the 41-pound turtle was found Monday on a beach at Oysterville, Washington.
The Newport museum’s Erin Paxton says that’s much farther north, with far colder water than the turtles are used to.
The U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service transferred the hypothermic and dehydrated turtle to the Oregon aquarium for treatment. Workers have been administering fluids to try to raise the turtle’s body temperature slowly.
Paxton says its initial bloodwork looks good and it’s stronger than many rescued sea turtles they’ve received.
