Three articles worth attention

The Opinion page in the Dec. 3 Herald was rich with good articles and ideas!

First of all, the editorial was based on Sen. Murray’s, D-Wash. and Rep. Ryan’s, R-Wis. bipartisan bill titled: The Evidence-Based Policymaking Commission Act of 2014. This act definitely deserves our support! Just imagine what all could be done if all policy were based on facts?

The second wonderful column was John Burbank’s, “We would do well to live by Advent’s ethics.” He reflects on how we currently celebrate the Holidays with a vengeance of catalogues, push e-mails, long to-do lists, and gifts to buy, etc. He states that we enable these material things to take over the spirit of the winter solstice. How do we keep this from happening? He reflects that for Christians, this may be best embodied in the four Sundays before Christmas, each symbolizing an ethic of life. Then he continues by saying that “We want to believe that we are a hopeful, peaceful joyous and loving people. But challenges us by asking, “Are we?”

And the last one I’d like to comment on is the letter by Charles Fay expressing praise for the Mukilteo School Board taking action on a model policy addressing the needs of its transgender students. I too, want to add my voice to praise them for taking that action. The more we can work to become a society that shows respect for anyone that is different from us, whether by the color of their skin, their religion or their sexual orientation, is the degree to which we will become a society that will be built on those values mentioned above of hope, peace, joy and love. But yes, as John Burbank mentioned, “this will take money and taxes. And yet that would be a true Christmas present … for all of us.”
