Recycle: Scouts take Christmas trees

Local Boy Scout troops again will take Christmas trees as part of an annual fundraiser. Depending on the area, Scouts either pick up trees from the curb or have a designated drop-off location. Most drop-off and pick-up dates are Jan. 3-4.

All decorations, tinsel, nails and tree stands must be removed. Flocked trees are not accepted. The service is by donation. Suggested donations range from $10 to $20.

Party: Seniors ring in New Year early

The Edmonds Senior Center plans a New Year’s Eve party a bit early, from 1-3:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at 220 Railroad Ave. Enjoy live music by Swingtime, a prime rib meal and champagne toast. Reservations required. Cost is $12 for members, $18 non-members.

Donate: Blood donors needed for holidays

Puget Sound Blood Center seeks blood donors of all blood types through Jan. 5 to help maintain a strong supply for patients in need through the holiday season. Blood donations typically dip during the holidays.

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. There are Puget Sound Blood Center locations in Everett (2703 Oakes Ave., 425-740-2909) and Lynnwood (19723 Highway 99, 425-412-1000).

Apply: Teachers sought for Japan trip

The Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications from teachers interested in co-leading the annual student visit to Hekinan, Japan during the last two weeks of July 2015. Chaperones stay with a host family in Hekinan and travel costs are paid by the Commission.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 30. Applications are online at www.escc.edmondswa.gov or at City Hall, 121 Fifth Ave. N.

Students are invited to apply as well. Up to 15 students ages 14-18 will be accepted. Students must pay from $1,100 to $1,700 for the trip. Deadline for student applications is Jan. 30.

Train: Be prepared to help in disasters

The Brier-based Emergency Services Coordinating Agency invites Snohomish County residents to take an eight-week disaster preparedness class, 7-10 p.m. Thursdays starting Jan. 15 at the Northshore Fire Department Headquarters, Station 51, 7220 NE 181st St., Kenmore.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is about keeping yourself and your family safe and assisting others until help arrives. The last class on March 5 includes a disaster simulation.

Blab: Last chance to send message to future

The Capsule Keepers are asking Washingtonians to write messages to future generations that will be kept inside the state’s Centennial Time Capsule. Messages will be microfilmed and sealed in the Time Capsule until its 2389 opening, 500 years after Washington reached statehood in 1889.

Messages to the Future may be sent via email to message2389@sos.wa.gov and also by printing and sending a form at http://1.usa.gov/1xHDDld. The deadline to submit messages is Jan. 1.

Create: Mr. Yuk poster contest

The Washington Poison Center is holding its annual Poison Prevention Poster Contest and invites children ages 6-12 to submit their posters by Jan. 9. The top prize earns $500 and a visit from Mr. Yuk to their school or program and a trip to the Capitol. Four runners-up will receive $100.
