Shogren leads Snohomish boys to 61-58 win over Shorecrest

BOTHELL — Junior guard Jake Shogren missed Snohomish High School’s first six basketball games this season with injury.

On Saturday, he made up for lost time.

Shogren connected on eight 3-pointers to account for all 24 of his points in a 61-58 victory over Shorecrest in the first round of the Bothell Holiday Classic. His final 3 came with just seven seconds remaining in the game and proved to be the game-winner.

“I was excited to play,” Shogren said. “I wanted to come out with a big game.”

With Snohomish trailing 3-1 in the game’s opening moments, Shogren made his first field goal, giving the Panthers their first lead. His last 3 of the night gave them the win.

“He obviously can shoot and he’s confident,” Snohomish head coach Len Bone said. “You don’t want to discourage him from looking, even though one or two might have been a little rushed.

“It just gives us one more thing that we have and one more thing that teams have to worry about.”

The Panthers needed every one of Shogren’s 24 points to overcome Shorecrest, which led for most of the game. Junior guard Drew Magaoay scored seven of the Scots’ first nine points and helped them build an 11-4 lead, but Snohomish battled back with an 8-0 run.

The Panthers led 17-13 after one period, but the second quarter belonged to Shorecrest. The Scots outscored the Panthers 20-6 then to build a 33-23 halftime lead. Magaoay capped it all off by making a half-court shot at the buzzer that gave his team its first double-digit lead.

Magaoay had 12 points in the first two quarters, but the Panthers defense tightened on the talented point guard in the second half, allowing him just six points after the break. He finished with 18.

“In the second half, we tried to just limit his touches a little bit more,” Bone said. “We played a little bit of box-and-one, but even at that, he still went past the one and through the box several times. In a game like that, we were just fortunate that we hit a shot because either team could have come out of there with a win.”

Snohomish trimmed the Scots’ lead to five by the end of the third quarter, but that momentum failed to carry over in the opening minutes of the final quarter. Shorecrest scored the first five points to bump the lead back up to 10 before the Panthers made their final push.

The Panthers went on a 9-0 run highlighted by two Shogren 3s. The second, which came with 3:48 to play in the game and cut the deficit to one at 50-49.

Moments later, Snohomish took the lead for the first time since the second quarter.

“I thought we did a good job of just kind of sticking with It,” Bone said.

Snohomish senior Collin Kane gave his team a 56-54 lead with 1:25 to play with old-fashioned three-point play. Shorecrest answered with two free throws by senior Brantle Harris to tie it at 56, only to have Kane give the Panthers the lead again using his imposing 6-foot-9 frame for two more points in the paint.

Kane chipped in 19 points for the Panthers.

After Kane’s basket, Shorecrest called timeout to draw up a play for Magaoay. Despite his second-half struggles, Magaoay delivered with a reverse layup with 22 seconds remaining to tie the score at 58.

The Panthers didn’t call a timeout, instead they went to Shogren, who came off a double screen and made his eighth 3-pointer of the game.

“It’s one of the things we run,” Bone said. “It looks good when you make the shot. It doesn’t look so good when you turn it over or miss the shot. We’ve done that, too.”

Snohomish’s defense held Shorecrest to 13 points in the final quarter, while its offense exploded for 27.

“We were more alert,” Bone said. “We got our hands on some balls. We didn’t let Drew get nine or 10 points. We were better as a team defensively.”

The Panthers’ second-half surge also was aided by cutting down on turnovers. They had 10 in the first half, but just four after halftime.

Shogren’s return was welcomed by the Panthers, but point guard Zak Carlson missed the game. The Panthers, who improved to 3-4 this season, are yet to play a game at full strength.

“We’ve got to get all of our pieces there,” Bone said. “We’re playing games of chess without a couple of guys. You’ve got to be pretty good at chess if you’re missing a couple of pieces.”
