The arrival of 2015 means students, staff and alumni of Seattle University now have another place to show their school spirit — the license plate of their cars, trucks, trailers and motorcycles.
Specially designed plates featuring the university logo went on sale Friday with a share of the proceeds earmarked for the student scholarship fund.
Seattle University is the eighth college in Washington with a special license plate.
Also Friday, sales began of a new special license plate to support the fight against breast cancer.
Money generated from sales of the plates, which contain the emblematic pink ribbon, will pay for breast cancer screenings and follow-up tests for women with limited or no insurance through the state Department of Health’s Breast, Cervical, and Colon Health Program.
Both special license plates can be ordered through the mail from the state Department of Licensing by sending in an application, along with a check or money order. They also can be ordered in person at a county auditor’s office or vehicle licensing office.
In most cases, a set of plates will cost $72.75 for passenger vehicles, $54.75 for motorcycles and small trailers, and $55.75 for a large trailer. This does not include any sub-agent or renewal fees that may be required.
The amount includes a $40 special license plate fee, of which $28 goes to the sponsoring organization.
Washington now offers 47 different specialized license plates for sale with proceeds going into non-profits and human services. The list includes plates for state parks, wildlife, children’s programs as well as the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders.
