Learn the basics of boating at upcoming classes

The Everett Sail and Power Squadron has several upcoming events for boaters.

GPS Seminar

A free GPS seminar is from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the conference room at Cabela’s. This seminar will explain waypoint navigation principles. You will then learn how to relate the GPS to your charts which provide essential information about what is around you. This seminar also shows you how to operate your GPS. A handheld GPS will be used as the demonstration model. This seminar is open to the public. Associated materials can be ordered during the seminar and sent to students for a small cost.

Radar Seminar

A free radar seminar is from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Harbor Marine Conference Room, 1032 10th St, Everett. The seminar will cover how radar functions, radar selection, operation of the radar under various conditions, display interpretation, basic navigation, and collision avoidance using radar. This seminar is open to the public. Associated materials that can be ordered during the seminar and sent to students for a small cost.

Basic Boating Class

The Everett Sail and Power Squadron will be offering a 7-week basic course on the fundamentals of safe boating.

Topics include: an introduction to types of boats, boating laws, safety equipment, accident reporting, protecting the marine environment, weather and many more subjects of interest to boaters.

The course is designed to familiarize the student with the basics needed to operate a boat safely and be in compliance with state and federal laws. Upon successful completion of the final test, students will qualify for the Washington State Boater Education card required before operating watercraft in our state.

The classes begin Feb. 9 and runs through March 23. The class is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at the Harbor Marine Conference Room, 1032 10th St., Everett. Cost is $50 for non-members, $35 for members. An additional person sharing supplies can take the course for $20.
