Applications are due Feb. 2 for the Edmonds City Council vacancy created when Strom Peterson resigned last week.
Applicants must complete forms available on the city web site and at the council office in the city hall, 121 5th Ave. N., Edmonds.
Completed forms are due at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2 at the city hall, by fax at 425-771-0254 or by e-mail to Council Clerk Jana Spellman at jana.spellman@edmondswa.gov.
The six current council members will interview applicants before they vote on appointing someone to replace Peterson, who resigned to start the term in the state legislature that he won in November.
The appointee will serve through certification of the November general election, when voters will choose someone to fill the last two years of the four-year term that Peterson won in 2013.
The appointee would have to decide by the early-May filing period whether to run for the last two years of the unexpired term.
The position will appear on the August primary ballot if three or more candidates file. If only one or two candidates file, it will appear only on the November general-election ballot.
When the council had a vacancy last year, members took 59 ballots before settling on Thomas Mesaros to replace former Councilman Frank Yamamoto.
Current council members say they don’t expect such difficulty this year.
The Mesaros position also will appear on the 2015 ballot.
