Boeing nabs 787-9 Dreamliner order

EVERETT — Boeing announced Thursday that Spanish carrier Air Europa has ordered 14 787-9 Dreamliners.

The order is worth $3.6 billion at list prices, but airlines and airplane makers often negotiate substantial discounts.

The airline is converting its long-haul fleet to all Boeing airplanes. It now has 22 787s on order.

Air Europa aims to operate one of the most modern fleets in the world, said Juan Jose Hidalgo, president of Globalia, the airline’s parent company.

“The first Dreamliners will start to arrive in 2016,” he said at a press conference in Madrid. “This will allow us to grow both the number of flights and destinations we will operate to by around 50 percent.”

Boeing delivered the first 787-9 in mid-2014 to Air New Zealand. The airplane is assembled in Everett and North Charleston, South Carolina.

Spanish suppliers to the 787 Dreamliner program include Aciturri, ITP (via its participation in Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine) and M. Torres, among others.
