MILL CREEK — Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Shane Hathaway with murdering his grandmother and attempting to murder his grandfather.
Hathaway has a history of threats against his grandparents, both 83, according to court papers. His father told detectives Hathaway, 24, is living with mental illness and likely wasn’t taking his medications.
Hathaway is accused of fatally stabbing his grandmother and attacking his grandfather with a butcher knife Jan. 15 inside the couple’s Mill Creek home. Police found him about three hours later. He was naked from the waist down and his hands were bloody, police said. He declined to speak with detectives.
The charges were filed in Everett District Court. Prosecutors have until Feb. 6 to refile them into Snohomish County Superior Court. Hathaway was being held on $2 million bail.
