VANCOUVER, Wash. — Police say the person struck and killed by a train early Monday about 10 miles east of Vancouver was a 17-year-old boy.
Officials have not released the name of the Vancouver teen.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said it happened at 2:43 a.m. Monday on the main Columbia River Gorge line, about 150 feet east of a crossing with activated gates and flashing lights at Southeast 164th Avenue.
Melonas says the crew applied emergency brakes but could not stop in time. It’s unknown why the boy was on the tracks.
Melonas says this is the second death this month of a person on BNSF tracks in Washington. A woman was struck and killed by a train on New Year’s Day in Spokane.
