JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska lawmakers will hear from law enforcement and marijuana supporters regarding regulations for the drug Wednesday.
The Senate Judiciary Committee introduced legislation to decriminalize marijuana in certain situations and create laws, including making it illegal to provide pot to minors. A companion bill is in the House.
State Troopers Maj. Dennis Casanovas and marijuana legalization advocates Bruce Schulte and Rachelle Yeung are expected to testify during Wednesday’s hearing.
Alaska voters in November approved an issue legalizing possession of an ounce or less of marijuana for adults 21 years or older. Lawmakers have said they want to pass the bill decriminalizing the drug by Feb. 24, when the initiative goes into effect.
