What: Living Vertical Garden
Vertical gardens are excellent ways to make the most of your available space, create a privacy screen or simply assist in defining a space. Whether you grow herbs, fruits, vegetables or ornamental plants, everyone agrees that the toll that gardening takes on the lower back is reduced when plants are elevated. Garden walls are a perfect solution for people who live in condos or apartments, and would like to grow edibles on their balconies. They are available pre-made at local retailers in both wood and man-made materials or can be built as a DIY project at home.
LEARN MORE: There are many books on the subject of vertical gardening, but readers may wish to review these two: “Vertical Gardening” by Derek Fell and “Patio Planters” by Jack Pollard.
WORKSHOP: Consider the WSU Small Spaces and Vertical Gardening workshop at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the County Extension Auditorium at McCollum Park, 600 128th St SE, Everett. For more information and cost, visit snohomish.wsu.edu/growing-groceries or call Kate at 425-357-6024.
SEE IT: The wooden vertical garden pictured above and others like it can be seen at two local WSU Snohomish County Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens: McCollum Park or Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville.
