MP wrestling finishes undefeated in league

ARLINGTON — The Marysville Pilchuck wrestling team capped off a perfect 5-0 conference season with a 48-32 Wesco 3A North victory over Arlington on Thursday night.

The Tomahawks started the night trailing 24-6, but finished the meet winning seven of the final nine matches, all by pin.

“It’s always nice when you have momentum,” Marysville Pilchuck head coach Craig Iverson said. “Our guys really got on a roll and it got us going. We have some veteran wrestlers that helped lead us.”

Keith Pablo sparked the run for the Tomahawks (5-0 league, 11-5 overall) at 160, pinning Arlington’s AJ Crew in one minute, 38 seconds.

“That was a big match for us,” Iverson said. “To win that match started a great swing.”

Killin Page (170), Drew Hatch (195), Alex Lafave (220), Austin Brown (285), Cole Daurie (106) and Sam Foss (113) also earned pins during the run.

Arlington’s Gavin Rork opened the match with a 34-second pin over Tanner Valin, starting a three-pin streak for the Eagles. Jeremy Nygard (132) and Clayton Hunter (138) earned pins to give the Eagles an 18-0 lead. After MP’s Ryan Daurie pinned Riley Oakes at 145, Cooper McAuslan pinned Alex Hatch at 152 to give the Eagles (3-3, 8-6) an 18 point advantage.

“We knew going in that they were incredibly solid through those weights,” Iverson said. “We had to hang in there. We fought hard but we had to go through some pretty tough stuff.”

Only two matches didn’t end with a pin on a night where Iverson’s father, Rick, was standing on the opposite sideline as the head coach of the Eagles.

“It’s always fun,” the younger Iverson said on coaching against his father. “The kids and coaches get along so it’s a fun night.”

Both the Tomahawks and Eagles will be in action when the 3A Sub-Regional Tournament begins at Stanwood High School on Feb. 6.

Jackson 42, Kamiak 40

MUKILTEO— After falling to an early deficit, the Jackson wrestling team went on a streak of five straight pins to help earn a 42-40 Wesco 4A victory over Kamiak on Thursday night, clinching a third-place finish for the Timberwolves in the league standings.

“They had a spark and they were hungry,” Jackson head coach Sherm Iverson said of his team. “They did everything they could to get those pins.”

After falling behind 22-6, Cain Bol finally got the Timberwolves on the board with a 39-second pin over Rubin Vierra at 106 pounds. Clayton Brush (113), Cole Anderson (120), Trevor Cook (126) and Jay Burns (132) kept the streak going for the Timberwolves (6-2 league, 12-5 overall).

“I think the kids knew they had to go out there and try to pin,” Iverson said. “So we were just taking it one match at a time.”

After a pin by Kamiak’s Alex Macey at 138, Tristan Weisser clinched the victory for the Timberwolves with a one minute, 48 second pin over Adam Fuchs at 145.

The Knights began their run to start the match at 170 with Cameron McIntosh defeating Hunter Saunders by major decision 20-11. Kamiak then earned pinfalls in three of the next four matches. Connor Mitchell (182), Jose Vierya (220) and Tanner Kunard (285) each earned six points for the Knights (4-3, 10-6).

“Kamiak is a great team,” Iverson said. “They do the right thing and they are a classy program. We have a lot of respect for them.”
