MUKILTEO— After falling to an early deficit, the Jackson wrestling team went on a streak of five straight pins to help earn a 42-40 Wesco 4A victory over Kamiak on Thursday night, clinching a third-place finish for the Timberwolves in the league standings.
“They had a spark and they were hungry,” Jackson head coach Sherm Iverson said of his team. “They did everything they could to get those pins.”
After falling behind 22-6, Cain Bol finally got the Timberwolves on the board with a 39-second pin over Rubin Vierra at 106 pounds. Clayton Brush (113), Cole Anderson (120), Trevor Cook (126) and Jay Burns (132) kept the streak going for the Timberwolves (6-2 league, 12-5 overall).
“I think the kids knew they had to go out there and try to pin,” Iverson said. “So we were just taking it one match at a time.”
After a pin by Kamiak’s Alex Macey at 138, Tristan Weisser clinched the victory for the Timberwolves with a one minute, 48 second pin over Adam Fuchs at 145.
The Knights began their run to start the match at 170 with Cameron McIntosh defeating Hunter Saunders by major decision 20-11. Kamiak then earned pinfalls in three of the next four matches. Connor Mitchell (182), Jose Vierya (220) and Tanner Kunard (285) each earned six points for the Knights (4-3, 10-6).
“Kamiak is a great team,” Iverson said. “They do the right thing and they are a classy program. We have a lot of respect for them.”
