PORTLAND, Ore. — The people who own the rights to the film “Dallas Buyers Club” have a recurring role in U.S. District Court.
They have filed hundreds of copyright infringement lawsuits across the country over the past year, accusing defendants of illegally downloading the Oscar-nominated movie through a peer-to-peer file-sharing program.
Another five lawsuits were filed Sunday in Oregon. The defendants in each case are identified only by their Internet Protocol addresses, and attorney Carl Crowell asks a judge to issue a subpoena to obtain the name of the person associated with the IP address.
It’s happened in some earlier Oregon cases. A Corvallis man last month agreed to pay $5,600 to settle with “Dallas Buyers Club,” and a Salem man must pay $15,230.
