If you missed Pete Carroll’s spot this morning on 710 ESPN Seattle, it’s worth a listen (see below). Carroll talked about the loss just hitting him today, and sounded very heartfelt throughout the interview. There are a lot of real emotion to process for this team, both players and coaches.
“I believe, in time, we’ll be stronger than ever,” Carroll said.
That was a theme he kept going back to, later saying, “We’re going to be stronger for this, we’re going to be better for this. It’s just cruddy we have to feel this.”
As for the actual news that came from what will likely be Carroll’s last public comments for a while, he said the first order of business, after meeting with players before sending them away for some time off, is to fill the vacant defensive coordinator position now that Dan Quinn is the head coach in Atlanta. Carroll also noted that some other assistants could leave, presumably going with Quinn to Atlanta.
“We have some work to do,” Carroll said. “With Danny taking off, there’s some stuff we have to do staff wise. There are some other guys being requested to talk to and all of that. So we have to work through that first.”
On Marshawn Lynch, who is headed into the final year of his deal, Carroll said, “We’ll see. We’ve been in the midst of negotiations for the future for a long time, so we’ll see how that goes.”
On the injury front, Carroll said Richard Sherman might not need Tommy John surgery after all.
“I’m might have been mislead on the Tommy John thing,” he said. “He’s not a pitcher, and he’s not a left-hander, so there’s a choice here to be made. Sherm may not have to have that kind of surgery. If he was a thrower, he would, but we’ll see what happens with that one. He has to go find that baby first, that’s what’s most important.”
Carroll again said CB Jeremy Lane had “a very difficult break that’s going to take some time. They have not done the surgery yet.”
G James Carpenter apparently suffered a concussion, Carroll said, which apparently they didn’t realize during the game because he never came out.
Carroll again praised the effort of Kam Chancellor for playing through the knee injury suffered Friday before the game.
The docs said, ‘there’s no way, there’s no way he should be able to do what he’s doing,’ but he was just not going to miss it.
