Sunday’s column by Jennifer Bardsley caused me to sit up and take notice. I do not care if she likes/dislikes football. What caught my eye were her statements about kids sitting in the cafeteria “eating free and reduced price breakfasts who are also wearing $80 jerseys.” Am I to assume that she spoke with these children and their parents to determine why the children were eating and why they were dressed in football gear? In her talking to these children or their parents did she determine how they got these items? Maybe the only Christmas or birthday gift? A grandparent? Other friend or relative?
The sweeping opinion in this column show either ignorance or a prejudice against families in tough times. I am in the neighborhood of twice Mrs. Bardsley’s age and have seen, met and known many families across the financial spectrum. Almost all have a story if asked. I usually enjoy her writings, but will read with a more questioning eye in the future.
