WinCo to open in former Top Foods site in Edmonds

EDMONDS — A new WinCo Foods grocery store is planned to open at the former TOP Food &Drug Store on Highway 99 that closed last summer.

The Boise, Idaho,-based chain signed a lease for the property at 21900 Highway 99 in the past few weeks, said Michael Read, a WinCo spokesman.

“We’re excited about it,” Read said. “Western Washington has been particularly good for us over the last few years and this site looks great. We’re excited about the opportunity.”

He said the store will need to be remodeled. The 86,800-square-foot store will open sometime in WinCo’s 2016 fiscal year, which begins in March.

The store will employ up to 160 workers and they’ll hire between 140 to 150 about four months before the store opens. People can apply online at www.wincofoods.com

All of the stores of the employee-owned chain are open 24 hours a day.

The Edmonds location will be WinCo’s 20th store in Washington and third in Snohomish County. The chain already has stores in Marysville and Everett.

Bellingham-based Haggen closed the TOP Food in Edmonds and a Haggen Food &Pharmacy at 20115 74th Ave. NE at the same time last year. Haggen has since agreed to buy 146 Albertsons and Safeway stores around the West Coast including four new stores in Snohomish County and one in Island County.

It’s unclear what is happening with the former Arlington Haggen. Both the Edmonds and Arlington locations are owned by MGP X Reit, based in San Francisco. A local representative for the company could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
