Seattle Seahawks All-Pro free safety Earl Thomas has a torn labrum in addition to the separated shoulder suffered in the NFC championship game, and will require surgery, a league source confirmed. Thomas is expected to be back by training camp according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who first reported the news of Thomas’ surgery.
A league source called “as tough as it gets,” noting the safety hasn’t missed a game in his five-year career, and said, “never missed a game. Will not change.”
Thomas only missed a series in Seattle’s win over Green Bay while having his shoulder reset, the played in the Super Bowl wearing a shoulder harness.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had mentioned a labrum injury when addressing Thomas Monday, so this diagnosis is hardly a surprise, but it’s still less than ideal for the Seahawks and their star safety.
Thomas is hardly the only Seahawks defensive back who was playing through injury. On Tuesday safety Kam Chancellor revealed that he suffered a torn MCL and bone bruise in the final practice before the game, and cornerback Richard Sherman played through an elbow injury, also sustained in the NFC championship game, that may require offseason surgery.
