Team a winner, in so many ways

This may sound strange coming from a fan of the Seahawks, but the Super Bowl loss is no big deal to me. Shortly after the game I was over it and back to normal and still love the team. I know, I know … how could I feel that way after such a disappointing loss, especially to the team from “way back East.”

It seems to me that our society places too much emphasis on “winning” and not on how the game is played. Our youth sports organizations are a good example of how this attitude has hurt our young people. There appears to be a philosophy today that if you are not a winner you are a loser. I recall the old adage; “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game than matters.” What are we teaching our kids today? There will always be more losers than winners, especially in sports.

In my opinion, the Seahawks are winners no matter how many games they actually win. They are winners in their style, motivation, talent, team support, attitude and how they play the game. After all, they are the division champs for two years in a row, and have brought considerable recognition to the city of Seattle as well as millions of dollars. They have one of the best coaches in the entire NFL who teaches his team to do their best, focus on today’s game and “go out there and have fun.” What better education could we offer our kids but this? I hope the majority of the loyal 12s continue to support the “best team in the NFL” as they deserve it.
